Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

Dr. King accepted his Nobel in the name of a movement; in the name of Peace. He took a moment in his acceptance speech to offer his hopes that the civil rights movement would be successful as well as a recognition that we cannot get to a state of peaceful cooperation through violent means:

“…I must ask why this prize is awarded to a movement which is beleaguered and committed to unrelenting struggle; to a movement which has not won the very peace and brotherhood which is the essence of the Nobel Prize. After contemplation, I conclude that this award which I receive on behalf of that movement is a profound recognition that nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral question of our time – the need for man to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to violence and oppression. Civilization and violence are antithetical concepts…Sooner or later all the people of the world will have to discover a way to live together in peace…”

In this recognition, Dr. King offered a hope for all mankind.

We remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with love today.

We admit that his vision for a more peaceful world has yet to be realized.

We re-commit ourselves to that end.
